Most people haven’t heard of IPv6. To all internet users, it is important to know what it is. Or at least its precursor, the IPv4. In layman’s terms, IPv4 is the IP address system used to run the internet, which is composed of four sets of numbers. Because there are limited combinations to this system, the world has now ran out of IPv4 addresses, necessitating the transition to anew system, the IPv6. This new system has longer addresses, apparently includes letters, and consists of more combinations. The IPv6 system is explained here. And also in this tech news blog.
The IPv6 will be tested on June 8, 2011 during the World IPv6 Day. Big IT companies like Google and Facebook are reported to be among those participating in the event.
